1# Curate search + Buy bulks for business

General infos

The client

PB Tech is New Zealand’s largest computing and I.T. retailer, offering the best prices on a wide range of technology products. The company’s aim is simple – to be a one-stop computing and I.T. e-commerce platform by helping the customers to easily search for the products they want to better help with their I.T solution.

Background

Two years after the COVID-19 lockdown, D. and A., social enterprise owners who run a tech training provider, have decided to hire more staff members to better assist the growing number of learners during the reopening. They used the PB Tech website for the purchase and delivery of new laptops (about 10 – 15 units) for their staff.

Identifing problems to define solutions

Problem Statement #1
Search & result Curation for laptops

Background: PB Tech website does not curate a refined search for purchasing businesses or professionals.

To find the products they are looking for, business customers have to go through the same product offers as any other common customers on the website.

Impact of the problem: This makes business customer's task more laborious, as search results are spoiled by irrelevant products - the user is often overwhelmed, and their purchasing decision is delayed; this might abort the user from buying which leads online sales loss for PB Tech.

Problem Statement #2
Laptops bulk purchase as Business

Background: PB tech site is allowing bulk quote of laptops, this leads to the "contact us" enquiry page first to obtain a quote for each product; the same process apply for users going through the PB tech business path, which goes through registry request.

It delays business customers buying laptops who must go through an email enquiry or registry request process first before getting information they need on discounts and bulk pricing.

This is a problem because businesses needing to buy laptops in bulk units do not have the luxury of time for a delayed purchase process which could lead to motivation loss and complete deterrence off the site.

User Story #1
Search & result Curation

As a business owner who is looking to purchase 10-15 laptop units for his staff

I want to my search to be eased, oriented towards what I need and correlated to my industry needs/expertise.

So that I can quickly reach the range of products I am looking to buy

and then purchase the appropriate laptops for my business and staff.

User Story  #2
Bulk purchase as Business

As a business owner who is looking to purchase laptop units in bulk order for his staff

I want to make a bulk purchase without awaiting feedback for online store bulk placement or from PB Tech Business email enquiry process, just to obtain a price or proceed with my purchase.

Our Solution

We first, centred the search on customer items usage.

Then we embedded the "Business customer registration " within purchase flow. Inducing a quick & light pre-registration step for users.

Developing

From current website experience we tracked the current CJM state of the website’s laptop page and business and bulk buying process.

We develop user flows in line with our User Stories to optimise the experience and find solutions.

From this optimised User flows, we projected a future user flow.

Crazy 8

We did crazy 8 for most of the search pages and start to organise the flow and information architecture.

Wireframe

Mocking up the wireframe was our quick way to proof and check our user flows viability.

Deliver

Prototype 1

We Based our design System on the current PB Tech style, font and colour palette.

We based the iconography on illustrations icons and item photos to be more generic and set the conversation on the usage rather than the laptop specs.

Testing

Using prototype 1,

We designed our User testing PLAN based on our user stories.

Given the scenarios, we witnessed how USERS interacted with the filters, buttons and information along the journey.TESTERS hesitated between Education and IT as a field of expertise, we needed to brief them to play the role of our customer.

Next Steps

Retake & responsiveness

We produced prototype 2 from testing feedbacks and started to proof the design for responsiveness for mobile screens.

Handover

We walked our developer and UI mobile designer through the prototype - using Zeplin we export the CSS and HTML from our Figma prototype 2 file.

Pushing further

What if... We centre the search engine on customer usage across the platform... and focus on USAGE of item instead of items categories.

They tell us “HOW they want to use their product for ” (we filter) so we can find the closest product for them..

We want an easy and interactive filtering that engages the individual user when searching online.
